Last year you dipped your toes into the pool of arts and culture. This year you are going to use those experiences to create a product which you will present to the class and teacher at the end of the year.
You are going to let yourself be inspired by a song from the country that you are going to visit for your international internship. This song forms the groundworks for the practical assignment you will choose.
At school you will start by doing research. Only when the research is complete and you have a finished plan that has been accepted by the teacher, may you start on making the product.
Most of the time you will be working in school for this assignment. But ofcourse it could be that certain things have to be done at home.
For this assignment you will keep a logbook. This is a document which you will use to keep track of your progress during this project. In your logbook you will record your (group) discussions, ideas, plans and take pictures of your process. Make sure to write in your log at the end of every lesson! Your log will be checked frequently! And yes, your logbook will be graded.
On the right, you can see a wonderful example of a logbook!
Week 1
Make a choice, are you going to work solo or in a group of 1-3 students?
Make a logbook document which every group member can access.
Choose lyrics or a piece of music / song (optionally with corresponding artist or band). The song that you choose, the artist that you choose, or the land where the video of the song has been filmed, must have a connection with the land that you are going to visit this year for your international internship.
Watch different video clips which are relevant (take notes of what you see, and write this down in a log)
Dont forget to update your logbook!
Week 2 - 4
Choose a practical assignment from the list above
Orientate in the design area with which you are going to work with
Make a design and a plan
Decide on which materials and locations you will be needing etc.
make sure to keep track of the progress in your log!
Get a "GO" for you plans (see below)
How to get a "GO" for your plans? Logbook must include:
What assignment have you chosen?
Who is in the group? Do you need extra help from someone else?
What song have you chosen and how do the song, product and international intership connect?
What material/locations etc. do you need? (try and think outside of the box material-wise)
sketches, plans, examples.
A scheduled planning of when, what, where, who
Week 5 and further…
Carry out your plan
Let me know if you need help
Write in your logbook every week!!
You’re going to design a costume which fits the lyrics that you chose (or the performing artist). You will be working with common (fabric/leather) and uncommon materials (plastic, paper, metal etc.). This can be done on a mannequin, this can be a male or a female: so on scale. You DON’T have to be able to sew: you can use pins on the mannequin and you can use common and uncommon connections (gluing, stapling etc.). Mind you; the number of mannequins is limited.
You’re going to design a bag, hat or piece of jewelry/ornament which will fit the lyrics you chose (or the artist you chose). You will be using common and uncommon materials.
You’re going to design a set in which a video clip can be recorded of the song that you chose. This can be done digitally, with photography, with drawing or by making a maquette (or a combination of these techniques).
You will write or make up an arrangement on the song that you chose and you will develop this. Perform this song yourself or make a version on the computer.
You will design a clip of your own to go with the chosen lyrics. You can do this by filming, making use of animation or by making a storyboard ( = comic-like sequence of scenes which you draw or photograph). Mind you, if you want to do this by means of animation or filming; it is a lot of work and you can only do this if you have filmed before or if you have designed with the computer before.
You will make a photo reportage which will fit the ambiance of the song – and possibly the performing artist – that you chose. Make a clear plan before you start and try to describe as well as you can how the photo’s should be looking. Make a motivated choice for color, black and white or sepia. Take note of image construction and composition and take a look at /read the book which former student Thomas made for his profile piece about photography.
If you come up with another way to mix various art disciplines in order to bring about a qualitative end product, discuss your idea with the teacher.
Logbook (SOM)
Weekly process (ideas, discussion, decisions) have been logged and are clear for the reader
Process photo's are included
When asked to hand in your logbook, your group have done so.
Clear planning of who/when/what
Documentation (photo/video) of a qualitative final product made with care and precision that corresponds with your ideas
Presentation (SOM)
Explain how the product is inspired by your chosen song
Explain the progress
How did your group work together?
What would you do differently next time?
What are you proud of?
It is up to you as a group to decide on how you want to present this. It could be a video, it could be different video fragments put together, it could be a powerpoint presentation with audio added. etc.
Pitch (present in the last lesson)
The goal of the pitch is to share our processes and final products with each other.Tell us about how you got to your final product
Tell us about the link between the country, song and the final product.
Show us your final product
The pitch must be 2-3 minutes
Every group member must actively participate.
Listening to your song/video is not part of the 2-3minutes!!
