Travelling is one of the most enriching things you can do in life. Explore new places, people, senses, sounds and experiences.
The next few assignments will be about travelling
Note: Travelling is something different than going on holiday, but what is the difference?
Where would you go if time and money were no issue? Why that particular place?
In the following videoclip you are going to see, you will experience the sensation that this British band felt when travelling for their tour in India. How do you think they felt and how can you tell?
1. Make groups of 2-3 people. With this group you are going to execute all the upcoming assignments. That means you’ll have to be able to work together, compromise and help each other come up with ideas.
2. Pure for inspiration, as a group you are going to go to the UNESCO website https://www.unesco.nl/nl/werelderfgoedkaart/list . On the UNESCO website you can find about 1112 pins showing the most beautiful places in the world (historically, culturally and nature places). Choose 2 places (1 cultural place and 1 nature place) in a country none of you have visited yet. Describe in about 40/50 words why you have chosen this place, why it attracted/fascinated you. Once again, this is only to broaden your horizons. Your travelling plans do not have to be based on these choices!
3. Think about which of the themes below gives you and your group the most ideas for your travels. Make a mindmap of 2 themes. This theme is going to be an important guideline for your trip and for the way you execute your assignment. If you come up with a theme of your own (ask the teacher for permission).
4. Choose two themes and make a mindmap for these themes.
- Travelling through time
- Fashion
- Religion or something you believe in
- Nature
- “The place of departure”; stations, airports, seaports etc.
- The sea (don’t only think about the beaches)
- Festivals
- Following a writer/famous person
- Refugees
- Mythology
- Dreams
- “Following a river”
- Food!
- A job in a foreign country
- A music/art style
- Sports
- “Roots”
- Politics
- Own choice (check with teacher)
5. Now that you have chosen a theme. Add more words to your mindmap and think about what kind of destinations and activities would fit your theme.
~~Once you’ve made your choices, run them by the teacher before you can start.~~
A fun, adventurous and pretty cheap way to travel is to InterRail. InterRailing has been popular way of travelling for a while now for teens.
Check out their website for inspiration. https://www.interrail.eu/nl/interrail-passes/bestseller
What is InterRail? To sum it up: InterRailing gives you the opportunity to travel around Europe for a month. The cheapest option gives you the possibility to take the train 7 times. This can get you pretty far!
For this assignment you are going to make an itinerary (= route and plan) with at least 6 places you are going to visit for your group trip. These places have to fit your theme of course. It is up to you as a group where you want to go, make sure it’s a logical route that connects with the InterRail train. If you have to take a ferry/bus/bike trip to get to a certain spot, that is allowed. Remember to keep in mind that the 7 train trips also have to take you home!
Every place you visit you are going to search for relevant cultural activities (festivals/museums/theatre/architecture/sculptures/restaurants etc.). Make sure that the activities are part of your theme and you explain why you want to visit these activities and how they fit your theme.
What if your group and your theme is best placed outside of Europe or you want to stay in the Netherlands? Then you’ll plan a trip with another means of travel: airplane, boat, bike, car etc. to visit 6 different places. Keep in mind that your trip should be able to be booked in your imaginary plan.
Together you are going to make one big product where all the assignments will come together. It is up to you how you are going to do this. Some ideas are: digital programs like powerpoint, word, publisher, prezi. Another idea is to make a paper product; travel journal, big paper with all your information, polar steps like.
Use an QR code to show different media like movies, songs and (website) links. Save it in your document or print it for your paper version?
Scan this < QR code with your camera/a QR scanner app and it will direct you to a QR generator website.
~~~~Once you’ve made your choices, run them by the teacher before you can start.~~~~
During your trip you will see a lot of beautiful things. For the categories architecture, paintings, sculptures, theatre arts (opera/theatre/musicals/dance), photography, think about what you would like to have a look at in the cities you have chosen.
Make sure to choose at least 3 things that you would like to see. Remember to make sure it fits your theme.
Note: there are of course a lot of very obvious choices that you can choose from, like for example choosing to see the Eiffel tower or the Mona Lisa in Paris. We would like you to think outside of the box and choose an original artwork that suits your theme.
Make sure to add a picture and state the artists, the year it was made and why you have chosen this artwork and how it fits your theme.
Part A: With your group, you are going to make a travelling playlist of at least 8 songs that meet the following requirements:
- The songs fit your theme
- The songs are in some way related or inspired by the cities you have visited
- The songs (or some of the songs) relate or are inspired by your chosen artworks
- Optional: a criteria that you have come up with yourself. As long as you can explain why
For every chosen song please state why you’ve chosen the song and why the playlist works together as a whole and relates to the requirements.
Optional presentation:
To share the songs that you as a group will choose for your playlist, you will be sharing the spotify code. See the wavy life underneath?
How to hear the song? Go to spotify, click on search and on the search bar then you’ll see a camera pictogram. Face the camera to the spotify code and the song will appear in your spotify app.
<<How to make a pictogram life this? Click on one of your chosen song.
When listening to a song. Press on the 3 dots in the top right corner
Press on the song cover with the spotify code. The song cover and spotify code will enlargen and it will give you the option to save it to your photo‘s.
Add the picture to your product.
Part B: For this part of the assignment, as a group you may choose which assignment you would like to execute.
1. Choose one of the songs from your playlist and together with your group make a new videoclip for this song. Your video will be inspired by your travelling plans and your theme.
2. Choose one of the songs from your playlist and together with your group make a new version of this song. (if you need help of certain equipment, please discuss this with the music teacher.)
3. Make a mash-up of a few songs from your playlist. (if you need help of certain equipment, please discuss this with the music teacher).
4. Imagine that your playlist would be brought out on an LP cover. Design the front cover of the LP.
- Be sure that your LP cover looks appealing with either pictures, edited photo’s, collages, drawings/painting etc..
- Don’t forget to match the back of your LP with your front LP and remember to make sure that the information about why you chose the songs (add title/composer/writer/producer/artist(s)/musician(s)/length of the song/cover?/.
5. If you have ideas regarding a music assignment, ask the teacher.
Make sure to motivate your choices and add this in your process document.
Final product: Together you are going to make one big product where all the assignments will come together. It is up to you how you are going to do this. Some ideas are: digital programs like powerpoint, word, publisher, prezi. Another idea is to make a paper product; travel journal, big paper with all your information, polar steps like.
Good luck!
